Getting Your Bush Bearings

🔭 Myth: The big sightings are always lucky. We hear this all the time, "You must have been so lucky to see that." And we smile. Because luck has very little to do with it. The best sightings in the bush are not accidents. They are the result of knowledge so deep it looks like magic.

The guide who finds the leopard in the tree didn't get lucky. He noticed a troop of baboons alarm calling in the distance forty minutes earlier. He read the direction of the wind. He remembered that a female with cubs uses this particular drainage line in the late afternoon. He put the pieces together while everyone else was looking at the scenery.

Tracking is a language. A compressed blade of grass tells you something passed here recently. The direction it bends tells you which way it was moving. The depth of a footprint tells you the weight of the animal. The scuff marks around it tell you if it was running or walking. An experienced tracker reads the bush the way you read a page of text — effortlessly, continuously, and with complete comprehension. The animals are almost always there. A leopard's territory might be 30 square kilometres, it is in there somewhere every single day. The difference between a sighting and a missed sighting is knowledge, attention, experience, and an intimate relationship with a landscape built over years.

Next time your guide finds something extraordinary — know that what looks like luck is actually a lifetime of learning distilled into a single moment. That's what a great guide gives you. Not luck. Mastery. 🌍

At Makomkom we go deeper — because the bush reveals itself to those who know how to listen.
