Our Mobile Safari is a basecamp that never stays still — we move deeper into the bush tracking the wild on its own terms, camping where the animals take us.
Sixteen days of wildlife encounters, friendships deepening, and memories that will last a lifetime. Our friend Phyllis has a gift for capturing the bush exactly as it is — unpredictable, alive, and utterly unforgettable. This is the story of her sixth trip with us, a vivid window into what you can expect from a Makomkom safari.
🦁 Myth: Predators hunt every day. You've travelled thousands of kilometres, you're out in the African bush before sunrise, and Africa's most iconic predator is doing absolutely nothing. But here's what you're actually watching. A lion sleeps up to 20 hours a day, not because it's lazy — because it's a genius.
The African bush is brutal on energy. Heat, distance, and the extraordinary athleticism required to bring down a buffalo or zebra means that every calorie burned in unnecessary movement is a calorie that needs replacing. And replacing calories means hunting. And hunting is dangerous. Lions get injured hunting. Sometimes fatally. A single kick from a zebra can break a jaw. A buffalo horn can puncture a lung. Every hunt carries risk. So the pride that conserves energy most efficiently — that sleeps the longest, moves the least, and only commits to a hunt with genuine prospects of success — is the pride that survives.
The numbers tell the story: A lion pride might attempt a serious hunt every 3–5 days. Their success rate is around 20–30%. That means for every successful kill there are multiple failed attempts, multiple days of rest, multiple mornings that look exactly like the one that disappointed you. What you're watching when a lion sleeps is not inaction. It's strategy. Patience. Thousands of years of evolutionary intelligence at rest.
The bush is not a theme park. It runs on its own schedule. The guests who understand that leave with something far more valuable than an action shot. They leave with perspective. 🌍
At Makomkom we go deeper — because patience in the bush is always rewarded with understanding.
